What is Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM)?

In a nutshell, EDDM, a service offered through the United States Postal  Service, allows you to saturate entire carrier routes in exchange for a lower  postage rate, approximately .16 per piece. While you can’t get as specific as a  targeted mailing list, the post office recently added a few more bells and  whistles onto their route mapping tool. You can now find out percentages of age,  income, and size within your selected route.  Keep in mind, you sill have to  saturate the entire route to use the EDDM service, you are not able to pick and choose specific addresses, only specific carrier routes within zip codes. You  are able to target businesses, residences, or both.

Is EDDM right for my business marketing plan?

EDDM isn’t the best fit for every business and every marketing plan. For  instance, a niche item or service with a very specific audience would not benefit from  the use of EDDM. When your product is very targeted and specific, you save far  more time and money in the long run by having a direct mail campaign with a  targeted mailing list. However, if your main audience is simply those customers  within a certain radius of your business, say a pizza parlor, then EDDM is a  great fit for you. It would be a waste of money for the pizza parlor to pay for  a targeted mailing list, and pay a higher postage rate. A savvy mailing marketing consultant will be able to help you determine which is best for you  and your company, drop us a line anytime! Our advice is always valuable and  free!

What are the benefits of EDDM vs standard direct mail?

The greatest benefit of EDDM is the lower postage rate. Specifically the size  of piece that can be sent for the ultra low .16 per piece price, you can fit a  lot of message onto a 6.5×15″ postcard! However, the specs the piece must meet  are very strict with the EDDM program, so it’s best to get help from PLS Print or your local printer. Another bonus is you do not need a postal permit. However, when  you are not using a postal permit, there are some limitations, and there are some benefits if you do use one. Going through a mailing service like PLS Print can save you time and money on your postage cost.

Can I prepare and deliver my EDDM cards to the post office myself?

Yes! Keep in mind it is a bit labor intensive, and the paperwork does have to be filled out exactly correct, or the order could be rejected. Many of our  customers have us prepare and deliver the cards for them. When we do so, we file the cards under our permit, and you get a slightly greater postage savings! However, if you choose to prepare and deliver your own, a good  printer will be able to guide through the process, and answer your questions.

Get started today! PLS Print can help you craft an enticing offer, design the piece, prep and deliver to the post office, it’s that easy!
